Abstract

Purpose – Organizations' interactions with the internal and external environment are realized through communication. The function of the communication system in organizations is similar to that of the nervous system in the human body. Problems in the communication system, just like the problems in the nervous system, lead to inadequate and / or misperception of the stimuli inside and outside the organization and the transmission of this misinformation to the decision centers, and based on these data, may lead to erroneous decisions and actions. Therefore, a healthy functioning communication system is vital for organizations. The purpose of this study is to provide information about problem solving techniques that can be used to identify communication-related problems in organizations, identify their causes and produce solution options. Design/methodology/approach – In this research qualitative analysis technique is used. Descriptive analysis, one of the qualitative analysis techniques, was used to evaluate the data obtained through document analysis. Within the scope of the research, doctoral theses related to organizational communication in the HEC National Thesis Center were scanned, and 15 theses containing communication problems and solutions were examined from 54 theses in total. Findings - One of 15 doctoral theses containing solutions for communication problems included the negotiation technique, and other studies included suggestions on increasing communication competencies; It has been observed that systematic problem solving techniques related to communication problems in organizations are not included. Discussion - In studies on the subject, it is seen that suggestions including increasing communication competencies are made for the solution of communication problems related to organizations. This means to make an effort to solve a problem which its origins are not determined. However, as with all kinds of problems, to determine the source of the problem, to reach the root problem and to determine the reasons that lead to an effective solution in the communication system, it is necessary to determine the most suitable solution options. In this study, information about problem solving systematics and techniques that can be used for communication problems and effective solution in organizations (Wh- questions, Fishbone, Error Tree and Decision Tree) are given.
