(The Impact of Participation in Decision Making on Role Stress Sources: A Research on White Collar Employees)

Abstract

Purpose – Being among the principal problems of the organizations; one of the important factors which has a diminishing effect on role ambiguity and role conflict appears as participation in decision making. Main goal of this study is to examine the impact on the participation’s in decision making on role stress sources. Design/methodology/approach – The research is mainly is a quantitaive one and has been applied on 203 white collar workers and managers of an international construction company which has branches, offices and construction sites in various countries by applying interview technique. As a result of the interviews, regression and correlation analyses are made by deducing that 197 of the evaluations are acceptable. Findings – It has been deduced that the participation atmosphere being one of the sub-dimensions of participation in decision making affects both role ambiguity and conflict in a negative and significant way. Nevertheless, attitude towards participation being another sub-dimension of participation in decision making affects role ambiguity in a negative and significant way, however, it has been deduced that there is no significant relationship between participation in decision making and role conflict. Discussion – First three sub-hypotheses have been accepted, whereas a significant relationship could not be detected in one sub-hypothesis in a statistical way. In this regard, role participation which has a substantial acceptable level of influence on role stress has been hold as forefront with its contributions. The impact of participation in decision making on role stress has been propounded in various ways in a way to support the related literature. In brief, it has been deduced that participation in decision making partially and negatively affects role stress sources in this study.
