Purpose – Maturity models are an effective method used to measure the performance of organizational processes. These models provide information about whether organizations possess a certain competency and how frequently that competency is repeated. This allows firms to improve their strengths while correcting their weaknesses. The purpose of this study is to provide light on current issues by thoroughly examining maturity model literature and serving as a guide for future researchers.
Design/methodology/approach – The bibliometric analysis method was used to investigate the use of maturity models. Bibliometric analysis is a way for obtaining relevant information on themes such as research progress decisions, research priorities, mapping, and achieving research excellence. A dataset for bibliometric analysis was generated by scanning maturity model studies published in the "WoS" database between 1988 and 2023. The Biblioshiny web interface, which is included in the Bibliometrix package, was used for data preprocessing and analysis via R-Studio software.
Results – The number of publications on maturity models, influential authors, influential countries, influential sources, citation analysis of publications and analysis of publications for Türkiye were carried out. It is observed that studies on the subject of maturity model have increased over time in literature. It was determined that USA (United States of America) and China are the countries with the most publications in the research field, Mahmood Niazi is the author, and Wang is the most cited author. It was also observed that the main journal of the field is “Sustainability”.
Discussion – It has been observed that research on the concept of a "maturity model" is gaining momentum. More research on maturity models, a concept that firms can exploit to obtain a competitive advantage in various industries, has been decided to be necessary. When the concept of “bibliometric analysis” was searched in the area of abstract and authors keywords for the studies in the database, it was observed that a limited number of studies were conducted. In addition, it was determined that there is no bibliometric analysis study in the field of maturity model for Türkiye.
