Abstract

Purpose – Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB), defined as employees’ extra behaviors on a voluntary basis, has been an important research are a in the literature. In the current empirical studies, the dimensions of behaviors beyond the formal job definitions and the factors leading to this behavior have been examined and the effects of these behaviors on the efficiency of the organizations have been studied. This study has been conducted to examine the effect of OCB of health care professionals on work performance. Design/methodology/approach – The population of the study is consisted of physicians, nurses, midwives, medical assistants and medical technicians actively working in Uşak University Training and Research Hospital and Uşak Oral and Dental Health Center between the dates March 1, 2018- April 30, 2018. A total of 117 health care professionals constitute the sample of the study. The data have been obtained through face to face questionnaires on a voluntary basis. Statistical analyses have been carried out with SPSS 23 package program. The data obtained have been analyzed using the statistical techniques such as confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation and regression analysis. Findings – According to the findings of the study, the relation between organizational citizenship behavior and contextual performance dimension of work performance is significant among health care professionals and organizational citizenship behavior affects contextual work performance positively. Discussion – This study is compatible with previous studies in the literature as it has established that organizational citizenship behavior of health care professionals has a positive effect on work performance. It is suggested that in order for the administrators to increase OCB, which contributes to the efficiency in the organization significantly, they should understand the expectations of employees and create an effective communication network through proper motivation means.
