Abstract

Purpose – In recent years, women’s entrepreneurship in Turkey has become an important part of economic and social transformation. The role of women in the business world is noteworthy not only for their economic contributions but also for their impact on achieving gender equality. The aim of this study is to examine the perception of women's entrepreneurship in Turkey and among higher education students. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, a quantitative research method was used to understand and analyze the perspectives of higher education students on women’s entrepreneurship. A structured questionnaire was employed as the data collection tool. The data collection tool consists of two sections. The first section includes statements aimed at determining the demographic characteristics of the participants. The second section contains 36 statements used to assess the perceptions of Mersin University students regarding women’s entrepreneurship, based on a scale. A 5 -point Likert scale was utilized. In the study, a Convenience sampling method was preferred as the sampling technique. The research data were obtained from 203 students attending Mersin University. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 software. Findings – The perception of Mersin University students towards women’s entrepreneurship is progressing positively. However, the results indicate a need for increased awareness and interest in women’s entrepreneurship. More education and awareness campaigns are required to change societal perceptions of gender roles and to enhance support for women’s entrepreneurship. Mersin University should provide more Academic and practical support in entrepreneurship and women’s entrepreneurship, which could help further improve students perspectives and contribute to the development of their Entrepreneurial skills. Discussion – The changes occurring in our societal structure have transformed all aspects of our lives, including the workplace. Male dominance in the workplace has been challenged, allowing women entrepreneurs to gain visibilitiy and recognition. Moreover, there is a lack of sufficient research examining the perceptions of higher education students regarding women’s entrepreneurship. Therefore, it is considered necessary to investigate how higher education students perceive women’s entrepreneurship. The study is expected to contribute to the literature and stakeholders in the field of women’s entrepreneurship based on the data obtained.
