Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to determine the mediating role of burnout in the relationship between work alienation and turnover intention. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, the relational survey model, one of the models of quantitative research, was used. The random sampling method was used in the study. Data were collected from 441 hotel employees with tourism certificates in Çorum, Amasya, Tokat and Samsun provinces. Amos 23 statistical program was used to analyze the research hypotheses. The theoretical model was tested using the bootstrap method proposed by Hayes. Findings – As a result of the analyzes conducted, burnout was found to play a mediating role in the relationship between alienation from work and intention to leave. In addition, it was found that there is a positive relationship between alienation at work and intention to leave, a positive relationship between alienation at work and burnout, and a positive relationship between burnout and intention to leave. Discussion – In the effect of job alienation on turnover intention, burnout plays an important role in explaining employee turnover intention. Hotel managers and employers should understand the causes of alienation and burnout and take supportive measures to prevent these situations in order to increase employee engagement and motivation. Creating a healthy and motivating work environment can reduce employee turnover intentions and positively impact organizational performance.
