The Mediating Role of Engagement to Work and Workplace Boredom in the Effect of Work Motivation on Job Performance in Healthcare Workers

Purpose – Migration of health workers in Turkey is increasing day by day. Employees migrate to other countries complaining about the intense workload and unfavorable work environment. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of work motivation on job performance in healthcare workers and to reveal the mediating roles of passion and boredom at work in this effect. Design/methodology/approach –An online survey form was used as a data collection tool. The sample of the study consisted of 384 people working in the health sector in Istanbul. The data were collected by online survey technique in 2023. SPSS 22.0 program was used to analyze the quantitative data in accordance with the research purpose. Findings – According to the results of the study, it was observed that health care workers working in private and administrative units are more engaged in work and do not get bored with the work environment than health care workers working in public hospitals such as city and university hospitals. According to the results of the regression analysis, the level of boredom in the workplace and the level of engagement in work are closely related to the level of work performance and work motivation. Work motivation affects work performance both directly and indirectly through work engagement. Discussion – It has been revealed that passion and boredom at work have an effect on the effect of work motivation on work performance. However, it is seen that health care workers working in public hospitals are not as committed to their jobs as those working in private hospitals regardless of the type of hospital, and it is seen that public hospital regulations such as city and university hospitals made in recent years are incomplete.
