The Effect of Professionalization Level on Organizational Commitment in Health Managers: A Comparative Research in Public and Private Hospitals

Abstract

Purpose – This study was conducted to determine the professionalization level of health managers and to reveal the effect of professionalization on organizational commitment. Comparative analysis of the professionalization level of public and private health managers constitutes the sub-purpose of the study. Design/Methodology/Approach – The population of the research consists of 604 health managers who worked actively in Ankara between November 2020 and September 2021, and the sample consists of 234 health managers who agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected using Personal Information Form, Professionalization Scale and Organizational Commitment Scale. The data were evaluated with percentage, mean, Mann Whitney U test and Kruskall Wallis test, Correlation and Regression analyzes in computer environment. Findings – The average professionalization level of the health managers participating in the study was determined as 71.12 ±8.90. There is a positive but weak relationship between professionalization and organizational commitment (r=0.382). The professionalization level of health managers predicts organizational commitment. 19.9% of the total variance of organizational commitment is explained by professionalization. Discussion – As a result, the level of professionalization of health managers is moderate, there are statistically significant differences in favor of private hospitals between public and private hospitals in terms of professionalization level. There is a significant, positive and weak relationship between professionalization and organizational commitment.
