Leadership in Maritime Businesses: Bibliometric Analysis

Purpose – Since Türkiye is bordered by the sea on three sides, it is connected to three continents and Africa via the Mediterranean by sea routes. Therefore, perspective transforms Turkey into an important base of maritime trade, maritime transportation and maritime tourism. Based on these views, the aim of the study is to investigate the place of the role of leadership in maritime business in the literature, as it is a special field in management and leadership. Design/methodology/approach – In the study, data of 288 works from the WOS database between 1989-2023 were examined using the bibliometric analysis method. For data analysis, VOSviewer and R Studio Biometrix package programs, which are frequently used to evaluate and visualize the relationships between authors, countries, journals, citations and themes, were used. Findings – As a result of the findings obtained by analyzing the data, the annual growth rate of the works in the field in the data set was determined as 4.71% and the average number of citations per publication was determined as 11.74. In addition, the international cooperation rate was determined as 15.28%. The majority of publications in the field of maritime leadership focused on areas such as international relations, political science and transportation. When the type of publications was examined, it was seen that they constituted 82.64% of the articles. Discussion – When the number of publications made by year is examined, it is observed that the importance of research on leadership in maritime is increasing. When scientific production is examined on a country basis, it is seen that the USA is ahead. In the analysis of the keywords, it is seen that topics such as leadership, maritime industry and the South China Sea come to the fore. As a result, it is seen that research in the field of maritime leadership has gained more importance and a significant level of international cooperation has been realized in this field.
