Abstract

Career choice is one of the most important choices that students have made throughout their lives. The examination of the factors affecting this choice is of great importance in terms of people, educational institutions and policy makers. The match between what a person sees as important aspects of a career and the extent to which they believe a particular career offers these factors will play a crucial role in that person’s decision making process. Consequently the purpose of this study is to understand what factors respondents found important when considering a career and how well they thought the banking industry offered these. The instrument used in this study was adapted from a survey conducted by Richardson (2009). Respondents were asked to rate 20 factors in response to the question. In the study, it was found that there was a significant difference in 19 of the 20 factors. From the results it is clear that students generally do not believe that a career in banking industry will offer them the factors that they find important.
