Abstract

Purpose – Technological developments have brought along various problems for employees in enterprises. Some of the factors that are effective in the emergence of these problems are the fear of missing developments outside the organization and the intention to quit as a result of being bored at work. The purpose of this study is to reveal the mediating role of fear of missing developments in the effect of boreout syndrome (boredom at work syndrome) on turnover intention in organizations.
Design/methodology/approach – The research was designed in a quantitative design. For the research, data was collected by questionnaire technique. The main mass of the research consisted of employees working in textile companies in Adana province. A sample was taken from the main mass by simple random sampling. In this context, 477 valid survey data collected were included in the analysis. Analyses were carried out with SPSS 25 program and Amos 24 software. In order to test the variables in terms of fit, a structural model was first created with structural equation modeling. After the fit and validity of the structural model created for the variables were determined, the mediator model was established.
Results – As a result of the research analysis, it is seen that all of the dimensions of boreout syndrome significantly affect turnover intention and fear of missing developments. While the dimensions of boreout syndrome, crisis of meaning at work and boredom at work have a positive and significant effect on turnover intention, the dimension of development at work has a negative and significant effect on turnover intention. In addition, all of the dimensions of boreout syndrome have a significant effect on the mediating variable of fear of missing developments. It was seen that fear of missing developments has a full mediating role in the effect of boreout syndrome on turnover intention. According to the findings of the study, it was observed that employees' turnover intentions increased with the increase in boreout syndrome. In addition, it is seen that the fear of missing developments positively affects turnover intention.
Discussion – Since most of the employees spend a significant part of the day at work, boredom at work and the fear of missing out on developments may increase the intention of employees to leave their jobs over time. This situation may lead to a decrease in organizational success. In this context, if the factors that cause the boreout syndrome and the fear of missing developments can be prevented, employees' turnover intentions can be reduced.
