Determination of Factors Affecting the Intention to Purchase An Electric Vehicle: The Case of Ankara Province

Purpose - This study aims to determine the factors affecting the intention to purchase electric vehicles and whether these factors vary according to demographic variables. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, the relational screening method, one of the quantitative research methods, was used. A total of 414 surveys were conducted on individuals over the age of 20 living in Ankara and the data obtained were analyzed using statistical package programs. Findings – The analyses revealed that demographic factors such as age, gender, education level,and income level differed on EV purchase intention. According to age, it was found that the perception of “Acceleration and Enjoyable Driving” of participants aged 56 years and older was higher than that of younger participants. Participants between the ages of 26-35 had higher perceptions of “Low Noise”, “Positive Reputation”, “Space in the Vehicle”, “Safety” and “Environmentally Friendly”. According to gender, it was found that women generally received higher scores in the sub-dimensions of electric vehicle purchase intention. Education level was found to influence scores in some sub-dimensions, with postgraduate graduates scoring higher in areas such as vehicle space, safety, environmental friendliness, environmental concern, and purchase intention, and their perceptions also differed. According to income level, it was found that certain income groups were effective on perceived price value, environmental concern and purchase intention. According to the city of residence, it was found that some perceptions of those living in Ankara were higher than those living in other cities. Discussion - As a result, it was found that electric vehicle purchase intention is related to demographic factors and there is a positive relationship between perceived price value, environmental concern and purchase intention.
